ABSTRACT:

A Quantitative, Exploratory Descriptive design was used. The study was conducted in intensive care units of selected hospital at Kannur district. 20 ICU Staff Nurses were selected using non probability purposive sampling technique. A semi structured rating scale was administered to assess the execution regarding Care4me strategies among ICU Staff Nurses. Results: The mean score (42.4±9.70), median 39.5 and the standard error 2.17 for the level of execution of ICU staff nurses. Out of 20 samples, 6 (30%) belongs to active, 13(65%) belongs to moderately active and 1(5%) belongs to passive. Demographic variables like age in years and BMI status is having association with level of execution score. Hence it is evident that most of the ICU Nurses are active in-terms of level of execution. On the basis of the study Care4me strategies have to be imparted to ICU Nurses to maintain the body- mind -spirit in harmony. Information pamphlet was prepared to create more awareness regarding Care4me strategies.

INTRODUCTION:

Harmony in the body- mind and spirit is the key to ultimate wellness and happiness, and as such attaining this balance should be an important goal for every individual. To some of us, it is based on a moral compass that revolves around charity, generosity, empathy, doing no harm to others or the self and other such values whereas others associate these terms with material wealth, good careers and high standards of living.1

A process of self-awareness through reflected action contributes to increasing unity of body- mind-spirit with a resulting impact on the state of harmony. Being a good/happy person can mean different things to different people. Nursing has shifted the focus of its praxis towards a commitment to holistic care. This holistic perspective suggests each nurse must bring an authentic self as the essential element of therapeutic participation with another human being. The art of the therapeutic use of self in relationships involves an aesthetic process of ongoing reflected action. The artful use of self provides an opportunity for expansion and personal growth and actualizes the potential to expand the good of all.1

As hospitals and organizations focus on margins as well as missions, nurses are once again doing more with less, working harder and longer, feeling torn between the increasingly demanding high tech and their desire to deliver high-touch patient care. World health care organizations are learning that the best way to care for their patients is to care for their nurses, knowing that a nurse of strong mind, body, and spirit will deliver better patient care, resulting in better outcomes, satisfaction scores, and ultimately, reimbursements. Nurses need care for   themselves as devotedly as they care for their patients. They need to CARE4ME strategies.2

Problems related to the nurses are gradually increases and the concern need to be studied in detail and solution need to be built in the nurse’s lifestyle in order to help the nurses in their difficulty. The Nurse’s feeling burnout, due to their work density and rhythm, by the diversity of technology employed, by the constant responsibility of this job, which often does not finish when the work shift ends, and, therefore, can lead to levels of suffering that are greater than one can imagine.3

Hospitals that implement CARE4ME strategies have happier, healthier nurses and find an increase in loyalty, better work environments, improved morale, increased safety, improved recruitment and retention, and better patient care and satisfaction. Connect with your Higher Power; that is to spend 15 minutes a day in quiet meditation, reflection, or prayer. Many research shows that people who attend religious services and participate in spiritual communities are healthier and happier. Ask for your “juice, Take an assessment of your life. It is a self realize that you are out of balance physically, mentally, or spiritually and you make a plan for what you need to achieve better balance. Rest and sleep. You would never deprive a child of sleep because that makes them sick and grumpy, yet how often do you “get by” on limited sleep? Turn off technology and electricity and get seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Eat right. Consume the quantity and quality of food you know your body needs. Drink six glasses of water a day, 4 times a day, breathe 15 minutes, three to four times a day, breathe slow, deep and easy, from your abdomen, like the breathings taught in childbirth classes and yoga. It reduces stress, tension, anger and those feel- good in your brain. Mind your mind. Practice positive thinking and visualization, knowing it can change your physical and mental well-being. Exercise three times a week. Walk 45 minutes a day, even in 15 minute increments.3

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

An exploratory study to assess the execution regarding “care4me” strategies among ICU staff nurses in selected hospital with a view to prepare an information pamphlet.

OBJECTIVES:

1.     Assess the execution regarding care4me strategies among ICU staff nurses.

2.     Find association between care4me strategies and selected demographic variables.

3.     Prepare an information pamphlet regarding care4me strategies.

HYPOTHESIS:

H1: There will be a significant association between care4me strategies and selected socio-demographic variables.

METHODOLOGY:

A Quantitative approach, Exploratory Descriptive design was chosen for this study. The study was conducted in intensive care units of selected hospital at Kannur district. 20 ICU Staff Nurses were selected using non probability purposive sampling technique. Demographic variables were assessed using a semi structured questionnaire. A semi structured rating scale was administered to assess the execution regarding Care4me strategies among ICU Staff Nurses. The rating scale assessed the parameters like spiritual health, psychological self-care, rest, sleep and exercise, food consumption and breathing exercise. The level of execution is categorized into very active, active, moderately active and passive.

Table 3 shows that the demographic variables like age in years and BMI status is having association with level of execution score and the demographic variables like marital status, number of children and experience in current working area doesn’t have association with the level of execution score of ICU staff nurses.

CONCLUSION:

Based on this study, it is concluded that it is important to maintain the body- mind –spirit in harmony. Reflecting on nurses suffering as something pertaining to the work, they require understanding of the situations. Inadequate rest worsens stress, especially through impaired mental functioning. In addition to rest and sleep nurses can practice different techniques to facilitate physical and mental relaxation. The study findings on execution of care4me strategies among ICU staff nurses showed that most of the staff nurses have moderate level of execution and there is significant association between demographic variable like age in years and BMI status.
